Disc herniation

Our personal injury lawyers have acted for many clients that have suffered from disc herniation arising from motor vehicle accidents, boating accidents, sporting accidents, slip and falls and other accidents.

A Spinal disc herniation is a medical condition affecting the spine in which a tear in the outer, fibrous ring of a vertebral disc allows the soft, central portion of the disc to bulge out beyond the damaged outer ring and, in some cases, affecting nerve function. Disc herniation can be caused by trauma of a motor vehicle accident.

Such tears may result in severe pain, even in the absence of nerve root compression.

A disc protrusion is where there is a bulging from the inner portion of the disc that does not go beyond the outer ring layer.

Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary depending on the location of the herniation and the types of soft tissue that become involved. They can range from little or no pain if the disc is the only tissue injured, to severe and unrelenting neck or lower back pain that will radiate into the regions served by affected nerve roots that are irritated by the herniated material. Often, herniated discs are not diagnosed immediately, as the patients come with undefined pains in the thighs, knees, or feet. Other symptoms may include sensory changes such as numbness, tingling, muscular weakness, paralysis, paresthesia, and affection of reflexes. If the herniated disc is in the lumbar region the patient may also experience sciatica due to irritation of one of the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve.

Disc herniation often results from the occurrence of a traumatic event, such as a motor vehicle accident.

Soft tissue injury (STI) / Whiplash

Our personal injury lawyers have acted for many clients that have suffered soft tissue injuries/ whiplash injuries arising from motor vehicle accidents, boating accidents, sporting accidents, slip and falls and other accidents.

A soft tissue injury (STI) is the damage of muscles, ligaments and tendons throughout the body. Soft tissue injuries can result in pain, swelling, bruising and loss of function.

Whiplash is a non-medical term describing a range of injuries to the neck and back caused by a sudden distortion of the spine associated with extension in the context of rapid acceleration-deceleration. This is a common injury following a motor vehicle accident where the occupants’ vehicle is hit from behind.

Spinal Cord Injury

Our ICBC/personal injury lawyers have acted for many clients that have suffered from spinal cord injuries arising from motor vehicle accidents, boating accidents, sporting accidents, slip & falls, and other accidents.

The term spinal cord injury (SCI) refers to any injury to the spinal cord that is caused by trauma. The most likely cause of a SCI is a motor vehicle accident. Depending on where the spinal cord and nerve roots are damaged, the symptoms can vary widely, from pain to paralysis.

Treatment can vary widely depending on the location and extent of the injury. In many cases, spinal cord injuries require substantial physical therapy and rehabilitation, especially if the patient’s injury interferes with activities of daily life.

A radiographic evaluation such as x-ray, MRI or CT scan can determine if there is any damage to the spinal cord and where it is located. A neurologic evaluation incorporating sensory testing and reflex testing can help determine the motor function of a person with a SCI.

Traumatic Brain / Head Injuries

Our personal injury lawyers have acted for many clients that have suffered from traumatic brain injuries / head injuries arising from motor vehicle accidents, sporting accidents and slip and falls.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external force impacts the brain. TBI can be classified as mild, moderate and severe. A Head injury can be referred to as a TBI, but is a broader category as it can involve damage to structures other than the brain, such as the scalp and skull.

Symptoms include headache, vomiting, nausea, lack of motor coordination, dizziness, difficulty balancing, lightheadedness, blurred vision or tired eyes, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, fatigue or lethargy, changes in sleep patterns, confusion, trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking, mood changes as well as impaired social behaviour. TBI can cause negative physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioural problems.

Motor vehicle accidents are a significant cause of TBI’s. Brain trauma can occur as a consequence of an impact upon the head, by a sudden acceleration/deceleration within the skull or by a complex combination of both movement and sudden impact.

Depending on the injury, treatment required may be minimal or may extend to medications, surgery, physical therapy, speech therapy, recreation therapy, and occupational therapy.
